turning a moment of rejection into empowerment.

Our story

Moms on Prom was created during a deeply personal moment between Darius and his mother. After being rejected by multiple classmates, Darius turned to the one person who would always show up for him—his mom—and asked her to be his prom date. “Mommy, you love dancing! And I’d feel comfortable with you there,” were the words that sparked a vision in Max’ine’s heart and ultimately brought “Moms on Prom” to life.

Not only did Max’ine decide to attend prom with Darius, she went a step further and created an entire prom experience for him—ensuring he would feel confident, celebrated, and fully supported on one of the most important nights of his life. Through this experience, Max’ine realized this wasn’t just Darius’s story; there are so many others who could benefit from having their mother by their side on prom night. And just like that, “Moms on Prom” was born.

Within 48 hours of announcing the idea to the community and asking for the public’s help in reaching the media, the story was picked up by multiple outlets, including CBS 17 in an incredible interview with Greg Funderburg, WRAL with Kate Chapman, WPTF Radio with Jeff Hamlin, and Chapel Hill Insider with Elana Etten.

Since then, the story has been shared all across North Carolina and reached Philadelphia, PA, gaining over 100,000 views, more than 1,000 shares, and even trending on Google’s front page.

What started as a mother’s love in a single moment has now grown into a powerful movement reminding the world that sometimes the most meaningful prom date is the one who’s been there all along.
